Our homemade cherry limeade recipe is PACKED with real cherry flavor. Made with fresh cherries and fresh lime juice, it strikes the perfect balance of sweet and tart–a delicious, refreshing drink for a hot day!

I LOVE this time of year for all the amazing produce! It’s berry season, it’s peach season, it’s watermelon season, it’s CHERRY SEASON! Basically: It’s time to make ALL THE GOOD THINGS!
That’s especially true when it comes to summer drink recipes. We drink water 99% of the time, but when the weather warms up, it’s just so fun to have special drinks at BBQs and summer parties.
Once I see sweet cherries at the market, I know it’s time to make cherry limeade! Our homemade cherry limeade recipe is the perfect summer drink. It’s light, fresh, and bright, easily made with just 4 main ingredients! It’s the perfect summertime treat.
Here’s all you need to get started on this simple recipe…

Simple Ingredients To Get Started
Instead of relying on maraschino cherries, I want fresh, ripe cherry flavor. These ingredients give you the real deal!
- Fresh Cherries. Yep! Our easy cherry limeade recipe starts with FRESH cherries. I find you get the best cherry flavor from real cherries, rather than maraschino cherries. (You can also use frozen cherries, which will save you the pitting step!)
- Sugar. For the cherry syrup, you’ll need some granulated sugar.
- Water. Some water will go into the cherry syrup, then you’ll finish the limeade with cold water.
- Fresh Lime Juice. Bright, tart lime juice is the perfect balance to the sweet cherry syrup. I don’t recommend bottled lime juice for homemade limeade, since it can run bitter and overly acidic. You’ll always get the best lime flavor from fresh lime juice. Promise.
- Ice. If it’s not ice cold, I don’t want it!
2 Tools To Make Your Life Easier
This delicious cherry limeade recipe isn’t complicated at all (seriously. 4 ingredients!), so the most time-consuming part of making it is definitely pitting the cherries and juicing the limes. 2 tools that make this easier are:
- A Cherry Pitter. We own this one that does just one cherry at a time, but this cherry pitter can handle 5 at once!
- A Citrus Squeezer. I swear by this inexpensive citrus squeezer for juicing citrus. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, easy to store, and easily juices lemons and limes.
How To Make Cherry Limeade From Scratch, Step By Step
As always, you can find the full recipe, with ingredient amounts, detailed instructions, and tips in the recipe card below.

- Make The Cherry Syrup. In a medium saucepan, combine pitted cherries, sugar, and 1 cup of water. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat and cook 15-20 minutes to soften the cherries and infuse the syrup. Remove the pan from the heat and let the syrup steep about 20 minutes. Strain the cherry syrup through a fine mesh sieve.
- Combine. Add strained cherry syrup to a large pitcher along with the lime juice. Stir to combine well. Add cold water. Chill until ready to serve.
- Add Ice. When you’re ready to serve the limeade, add 3-4 cups ice & your favorite garnishes.
- Serve & Store. Enjoy cold and store leftover limeade in the fridge 3-4 days.

Love Sonic Cherry Limeade? Try This!
Skip the Sonic drive in and make your own happy our at home! If you crave Sonic’s cherry limeade, you can channel some of that same flavor by pouring in some lemon-lime soda (like Sprite) at the end. It’ll be sweeter (like Sonic’s!), but will have that fizzy lemon-lime touch that makes their limeade so popular.
(FYI – Most Sonic cherry limeade copycat recipes use a jar of maraschino cherries & maraschino cherry juice. While I absolutely think they have a fun place in the world, I just LOVE the flavor you get from real cherries! Plus, with our version you can skip the artificial flavors and food dyes!)

FAQ + Tricks For The Best Cherry Limeade
Swaps & Variations
- Add Fresh Mint. I love adding a bit of fresh mint to the cherry simple syrup as it simmers. You can use about 1/2 cup fresh mint along with the cherries for great flavor!
- Make It Bubbly! Instead of finishing the limeade with cold water, try swapping in sparkling water or club soda for a sparkling cherry limeade. (Add this right before serving to preserve the bubbles!)
- Cut Down On Sugar. For a lower-carb version, feel free to use a 1:1 keto sweetener like Erythritol or Monk Fruit in place of the granulated sugar.
- Lemonade. Prefer lemonade? Swap an equal amount of fresh lemon juice to make cherry lemonade instead!
Let’s Talk Garnish!
I love garnishing drinks with a few final touches. In this case, some fresh cherries, lime slices, or a lime wedge in each glass can play up the flavors in this drink. Or, you can add a little fresh mint or a maraschino cherry.
