A Few Gluten-Free Tips To Remember

If you don’t usually bake gluten-free (or you’re new to baking gluten-free!), here are a few quick tips to keep in mind to keep your gluten-free valentine safe:

Pouring melted white chocolate onto cereal, pretzels, and m&ms to make Valentines snack mix
  • Double-Check Ingredients. Any time you’re baking for a gluten-free friend or loved one, you’ll need to double check EVERY ingredient. Some ingredients (like candy, chocolate, or sprinkles) can vary based on the brand and not all brands use the same testing or ingredient standards. So, what’s gluten-free in one brand may not be in another. Keep your loved ones safe by double-checking all your labels before you start.
  • Avoid Cross-Contamination. Similarly, you’ll need to be vigilant about cross contamination. If you’ve scooped sugar out of an open bag with a measuring cup you’ve used to make something with gluten, that sugar is no longer safe. For best results, use fresh or separate ingredients for gluten-free treats & use clean or separate utensils, pans, etc. when baking gluten-free to avoid any cross contamination. Glass & metal items clean best since they’re non-porous!
  • Use The Right Flour. Most gluten-free flours are NOT interchangeable. For instance, a recipe that calls for almond flour (which ADDS moisture to a recipe) will behave VERY differently if you use coconut flour (which ABSORBS moisture FROM a recipe). If a recipe calls for a 1:1 or cup-for-cup gluten-free flour blend with xanthan gum, make sure you’re using what the recipe calls for!
  • Measure Carefully. Lastly, when possible, I highly recommend using a digital scale to measure your dry ingredients. You’ll get the best, most consistent results!
