What To Watch Out For

The biggest thing to watch out for with corn syrup is a potential allergen statement in the ingredient list. While corn syrup may not contain any gluten-containing grains or ingredients, some food manufacturers do not use dedicated processing equipment or facilities, so there is some risk of cross contamination during manufacturing processes.

Many brands in the food industry disclose any of the most common food allergens on their food labels.

One example is Target’s Market Pantry Corn Syrup. While the ingredients list is gluten-free (corn syrup, salt, vanilla extract), the package states “Processed In A Facility That Also Handles Egg, Milk, Soy, Wheat and Fish Ingredients”

What Is Corn Syrup?

While it’s not a natural sweetener, corn syrup’s chemical structure and long shelf life lend itself very well to baking. It helps prevent sugar crystallization in caramel sauce and candy, prevents the formation of ice crystals in ice cream, adds a shiny, glossy effect to buttercream, caramel popcorn and ganache, adds moisture and chewiness to a cookie recipe, and helps provide structure in recipes like Chex Mix, delicious pecan pies, or Scotcheroos.

Is Corn Syrup The Same As High Fructose Corn Syrup?

Not quite! High fructose corn syrup takes regular corn syrup and processes it further, treating it with enzymes to help break it down into fructose and glucose, with a higher ratio of fructose to glucose (hence the high fructose name). High-fructose corn syrup is a common ingredient in soft drinks, candies, pancake syrup/imitation maple syrup, salad dressings, sauces, and more.

What’s The Difference Between Light Corn Syrup & Dark Corn Syrup?

Here’s what you need to know about gluten-free sugar…

Is White Sugar Gluten-Free?

Granulated sugar IS considered gluten-free. Whether it’s beet sugar or cane sugar, both kinds of white sugar are made with a single ingredient, so they can safely be considered gluten-free.

One thing to note is that commercial white sugar is usually processed with natural carbon (or bone char) to help decolorize it and give it that super white appearance. This is all gluten-free, but does mean that most regular white sugar is not vegan. (Organic sugar in the United States is always made from sugarcane and is not processed with bone char.)

Is Brown Sugar Gluten-Free?

Brown sugar is actually just white sugar with added molasses! Both sugar and molasses are considered gluten-free, so brown sugar is safe for Celiac disease and gluten intolerance.

What about light brown sugar vs dark brown sugar? That’s simply a matter of how much molasses is in the sugar! Dark brown sugar has more molasses than light brown sugar. Both light brown sugar and dark brown sugar are gluten-free.

Is Powdered Sugar Gluten-Free?

Most of the time, yes! Powdered sugar (sometimes labeled confectioner’s sugar or icing sugar) is unique from other kinds of sugar because it usually contains some sort of starch to help avoid clumps. Most brands use cornstarch or arrowroot starch, which are both gluten-free. This is one sugar you’ll want to double-check before using!

What About Other Kinds Of Sugar?

• Superfine Sugar/Caster Sugar – this fine-grained sugar is gluten-free. It’s just like white sugar, simply with smaller granules. It dissolves more easily than other sugar, making it great for mocktails & beverages, simple syrup, meringues, and more.
• Sparkling Sugar & Sanding Sugar – these decorative sugars are both gluten-free.
• Sugar Cubes – Are sugar cubes gluten-free? YES! They’re just sugar or sugar held together with sugar syrup, so they’re gluten-free. (Do check your labels on this one, though!)
• Demerara Sugar & Turbinado Sugar. Raw cane sugar, sometimes labeled Turbinado sugar, Demerara sugar, or raw sugar, is also considered gluten-free. It’s typically used as a garnish or to sweeten coffee and tea.
• Honey, Agave & Maple Syrup. In their pure form, these are all gluten-free.
• Sugar Alternatives – Most alternative sweeteners, sugar substitutes, and artificial sweeteners, such as erythritol (Swerve), sorbitol, xylitol, stevia (liquid and powdered), aspartame (Nutrasweet), sucralose (Splenda), saccharin (Sweet N Low) monk fruit, allulose, and others are gluten-free. As always, read the labels on anything you plan to use!

FAQ + Tips For Buying Gluten-Free Sugar

Avoid Cross Contamination With These Tips!

If you’re baking for a gluten intolerant family member (whether they have Celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity), it’s very important to avoid cross contamination (getting gluten-containing ingredients mixed into gluten-free ingredients.) Even a very small amount of contact with wheat, barley, or other gluten ingredients can cause symptoms of a reaction, immune response, or illness in Celiacs or gluten-intolerance.

• To avoid this, the best practice is to use a separate bag of sugar JUST for gluten-free baking.
• Additionally, do not use tools that have come in contact with wheat flour to scoop or measure gluten-free sugar when baking.
• Either pour the sugar out into your measuring cup or use clean or separate measuring tools for gluten-free ingredients.

What About Flavored Sugar?

If you’re buying an infused or flavored sugar, it’s important to check the label to ensure it’s gluten-free. Many infused sugars and flavored sugars use simple ingredients, like vanilla, orange zest, cinnamon, etc. that are clearly gluten-free, but it’s important to double-check before using. Avoid extras like malt, which is made from barley.

When In Doubt, Ask A Doctor!

As with any food you’re unsure about with a gluten-free diet, consult a doctor, registered dietitian, or nutrition professional for medical advice about your specific situation. Are Maple Syrup And Pancake Syrup The Same Thing?

So what is the difference between maple syrup and pancake syrup? Glad you asked! They are NOT the same thing and can’t always be used interchangeably. Here’s a brief look at each one:

Maple Syrup, At A Glance

Pure maple syrup is a natural sweetener made of boiled maple tree sap that’s been reduced until it’s amber in color. The only ingredient in true maple syrup is maple syrup or organic maple syrup. Maple syrup does not contain gluten and is safe for celiacs and gluten-free diets.

Maple syrup contains trace minerals and contains no added sweetener. It adds sweetness to pancakes, french toast, waffles, and other breakfast foods, or it can add maple flavor to baked goods and savory dishes. The flavor is nuanced and often contains caramel-like undertones.

Pancake Syrup, At A Glance

Pancake syrup, on the other hand, emerged as a budget-friendly alternative to pure maple syrup and rarely contains any actual maple syrup. It’s artificial maple syrup or imitation maple syrup and has a strong artificial maple flavor.

Common ingredients for pancake syrup in the United States include sugar, corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup, maple flavoring, caramel coloring, salt, and additives/preservatives like sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium benzoate and sorbic acid. It’s meant to be used as a condiment for breakfast dishes (pancakes, waffles, french toast), but is NOT a good choice for cooking or baking.

They can both be used as a condiment, but they are NOT interchangeable in baking or cooking recipes that call for maple syrup.

Is Maple Syrup Gluten-Free?

So, is all maple syrup gluten-free? YES! Real maple syrup (sometimes called pure maple syrup) is made of 100% boiled sap from maple trees, which is naturally gluten-free. All maple syrup is gluten-free unless additional flavorings containing gluten have been added.

Look for the words “real maple syrup,” “pure maple syrup,” or “100% maple syrup,” which are all clues you’ve got the real deal. Then just double-check the ingredients list, which should only list maple syrup as an ingredient.

Note: some infused syrups will contain ingredients like maple syrup and vanilla bean, for instance, or maple syrup and cinnamon. These are still considered real or pure maple syrup and can be used in baking or as a condiment. You just don’t want to see additional ingredients like cane sugar, artificial flavors, artificial colors (like caramel color), or preservatives.

Which Brands Of Maple Syrup Are Gluten-Free?

When it comes to pure maple syrup, most brands are gluten-free, since the only ingredient is maple syrup. The good news is that this makes it easy to find gluten-free syrup! A few (of many) safe brands of gluten-free maple syrup to choose from are:

Is Pancake Syrup Gluten-Free?

For the most part, yes! Most pancake syrup is gluten-free and safe for celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and gluten-free diets. In general, pancake syrup is made without wheat products or gluten-containing ingredients.

A few ingredients to keep an eye out for are malt or malt syrup, which is NOT gluten-free. (Malt is derived from barley, which contains gluten).

Some colorants or flavorings can contain wheat or gluten, so always double-check your labels for a “contains: wheat” or “may contain wheat” statement, which can indicate cross contamination or shared equipment during processing.

Which Brands Of Pancake Syrup Are Gluten-Free?

Now, let’s take a look at some common brands of gluten-free pancake syrup to make navigating the grocery store aisles easier than ever:

Is Log Cabin Syrup Gluten-Free?

Log Cabin pancake syrup contains no gluten-ingredients. It’s not certified gluten-free, but contains no allergen statements on its packaging.

Log Cabin is owned by ConAgra, and their gluten-free policy states that “All major food allergens are shown on the ingredient list of our products and/or will be noted in a “Contains” statement just after the ingredient list.” Log Cabin syrup has no “contains” or “may contain” statement.

It’s also worth noting that Log Cabin produces a “natural maple syrup” variety that’s based off brown rice syrup and is also gluten-free.

Is Mrs. Butterworth Syrup Gluten-Free?

Yes. Mrs Butterworth syrup contains none of the top 8 allergens. While it’s not certified gluten-free, it contains no wheat or gluten ingredients and none of the top 8 allergens.

The Mrs. Butterworth website states, “According to the FDA, the most common food allergens are milk, peanuts, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat. This product does not contain any of these common food allergens”

Is Hungry Jack Syrup Gluten-Free?

Hungry Jack pancake syrup contains no gluten ingredients (and is also Kosher Pareve).

Their website states that “Hungry Jack syrup does not contain ingredients derived from gluten.” but goes on to explain that they are not certified gluten-free based on their company criteria, which includes ingredient screening, gluten testing (<20 parts per million), and stringent manufacturing procedures.

Is Pearl Milling Company Syrup Gluten-Free?

The Pearl Milling Company allergen statement says, “Any of our food products that contain the most commonly allergenic foods (peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, egg, wheat, milk and soy) will include these allergens in the ingredient statement…We also highlight any of these allergens in bold letters following the ingredient list with a ‘contains’ statement to assist all consumers in identifying products containing known allergens.”

(FYI: Pearl Milling Company is the re-branded name of the previous Aunt Jemima syrup)

Is Aunt Jemima Syrup Gluten-Free?

Aunt Jemima syrup was rebranded to Pearl Milling Company syrup in 2020 (named after the company that produced the original pancake mix). Aunt Jemima syrup was gluten-free and the re-branded Pearl Milling Company syrup is gluten-free.

FAQ: Gluten Free Maple Syrup

How Can You Tell If Syrup Is Gluten-Free? Pure maple syrup (with just maple syrup in the ingredient list) is always gluten-free, unless there are added ingredients. For pancake syrup and flavored syrup, check the label for a “contains” or “may contain” statement near the ingredients list (like “may contain wheat”), which would indicate wheat ingredients or cross contamination risk.

Can I Use Pancake Syrup Instead Of Maple Syrup For Baking? Pancake syrup is NOT a good substitute for pure maple syrup in cooking or baking. It’s sweeter and doesn’t have the same flavor, so it can throw off the taste and texture of your recipe. (The strong imitation maple flavor will overpower a recipe, where pure maple syrup will add subtle sweetness and delicate maple flavor.)

Can You Make Homemade Gluten-Free Syrup? Yes! You can make gluten-free pancake syrup at home with simple ingredients like sugar, maple exract, water, vanilla, etc. Or, use our raspberry sauce for a fun fruity twist!

What Are The Different Grades Of Maple Syrup? Maple syrup used to be categorized either Grade A or Grade B syrup. In recent years, the grading system was revised and all maple syrup falls under Grade A, with the grading now referring to the color and taste:

• Grade A Golden Color With Delicate Taste – Harvested early in the season, with most subtle flavor
• Grade A Amber Color With Rich Taste – Classic maple syrup taste
• Grade A Dark Color With Robust Taste – More intense maple flavor

Are Cinnamon Sticks Gluten-Free?

Yes! Just like ground cinnamon, cinnamon sticks are naturally gluten-free and have no gluten-containing ingredients. They should be single ingredient cinnamon sticks (just cinnamon sticks with no other added ingredients).

What Brands Of Cinnamon Are GLuten-Free?

The good news is that most brands of cinnamon are gluten-free! It’s easy to find gluten-free cinnamon in most grocery stores. Keep an eye out for single ingredient spices (just one ingredient–cinnamon) in the ingredient list. Some of our favorite gluten-free cinnamon brands are:

FAQ: Gluten-Free Cinnamon

How Do You Know If Cinnamon Is Gluten-Free? My biggest tip is to look for single-ingredient spices. There should only be one ingredient–cinnamon or cinnamon sticks in the ingredient list. Use the same guidelines for spice blends in jars.

I try to avoid any anti-caking agent (like silicon dioxide), silicates (like calcium silicate), or other additives and preservatives as these can dilute the flavor and increase risk for cross contamination in the manufacturing processes. Then, check the label for any allergen statement, which can be a helpful deciding factor in whether it’s gluten-free. (In rare cases, some brands use wheat starch, so it’s always best to check!)

Are Spices Certified Gluten-Free? While most herbs and spices themselves are gluten-free, few spice brands take the time to certify as gluten-free. This is because they have to undergo rigorous and expensive testing to detect the presence of gluten and qualify for this designation, verifying that they have good manufacturing practices and the level of gluten is fewer than 20 ppm of gluten in their products, since even tiny amounts of gluten can impact those with Celiac or non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

However, they’re required to disclose potential allergens on their packaging, so if you don’t see a “contains” (i.e. “contains wheat ingredients”) or “may contain” statement (“may contain wheat, rye, barley, etc.”), and there’s only one ingredient in the ingredient list, it’s more likely to be gluten-free. As always, use your best judgement and don’t take any unnecessary health risk!

Though harder to find, KTOOS come in MANY varieties—vanilla with vanilla filling, chocolate with chocolate filling, birthday cake, cinni-bun, and more! We like most of these flavors even better than the original!

Glutino Chocolate Vanilla Creme Cookies are one of our go-to brands for pretzels, animal crackers, and cereal bars, but they also make a few varieties of gluten-free cookies! They’re a little less widely available, but they hold their own next to Oreo! We love the smooth creme center–plenty of vanilla flavor!

Goodie Girl Chocolate Creme Cookies

Goodie Girl is one of my favorite gluten-free brands out there lately. Their branding is SO GOOD, and the cookies are delicious too. Their take on gf Oreo cookies contains no peanuts, eggs, dairy, or gluten, making it a school-safe option we love.

If you enjoy sandwich cookies, Goodie Girl also carries Birthday Cake & S’More flavors, We thought the Birthday Cake flavor didn’t *quite* come through for us, but really like the S’more ones! We’ve been very impressed at their other takes on famous cookies. Their gluten-free mint cookies taste SO much like Girl Scout Thin Mints!

Great Value Gluten-Free Chocolate Creme Sandwich Cookies

• WHERE TO BUY: Walmart (Online or In-Store)
• ARE THEY VEGAN?
• TASTE TEST NOTES: These are probably our least favorite. The texture and taste just don’t deliver as well as the other brands. That said, they work well for baking.

Clocking in at less then $3 a bag, this Walmart store brand gluten-free chocolate sandwich cookie is the most affordable of the bunch, and is carried by many stores nationwide—another plus! While we feel the flavor is a bit lacking for snacking, they work great in gluten-free Oreo pie crust!

Simple Truth Gluten-Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

• COST: $3-4
• WHERE TO BUY: Kroger stores (Fry’s, King Sooper’s, Ralph’s, Smith’s, etc.), Vitacost
• ARE THEY VEGAN? No. This brand uses egg white powder in their recipe.
• TASTE TEST NOTES: Great flavor & great budget-friendly choice!

Simple Truth, a Kroger store brand, is made without dyes or artificial colors and flavors. They’re also made in a peanut-free facility, so they’re school safe!

This budget-friendly gluten-free chocolate sandwich cookie was our favorite generic option after Trader Joe’s. Crisp creme-filled cookies with great flavor–it’s a solid choice!

Trader Joe’s Gluten-Free Joe-Joe’s (Our Runner Up Fave)

• COST: $3
• WHERE TO BUY: Trader Joe’s
• ARE THEY VEGAN? No. This brand uses egg in their recipe.
• TASTE TEST NOTES: Our second favorite, just *barely* behind Oreo brand. Their new formulation hits all the right notes!

It was a happy day at our house when Trader Joe’s launched gluten-free Joe-Joe’s! Their take on classic chocolate sandwich cookies has been a fan favorite for years.

They JUST re-formulated the cookie as of June 2022, and the new formulation is even better than the last. It’s a tasty new spin on their Joe-Joe cookies. They have great crispy cookie texture with lots of chocolate flavor, and a smooth vanilla cream center. Yum!

Their original gluten-free Joe-Joe’s are yummy, but we especially love the holiday gluten-free Peppermint Joe-Joe’s! Keep an eye out for them in November-December.

Mi-Del Gluten-Free Chocolate Sandwich Cookies

• ARE THEY VEGAN? Mi-Del includes no animal/egg/dairy products in their recipe, but isn’t listed as certified gluten-free.
• TASTE TEST NOTES: Pretty crumbly, without a ton of flavor, but they work well for crust.

Are M&Ms Gluten-Free? Many varieties of M&Ms ARE Gluten-Free, but not all! Here’s everything you need to know about finding gluten-free M&Ms.

I’ve been knee-deep in holiday recipe testing (isn’t that crazy!?), and whether you’re brand new to eating a gluten-free diet or you’re a seasoned gluten-free baker, you know that reading labels is ALWAYS going to be the name of the game when it comes to baking with gluten-free ingredients.

We’ve been working on some fun candy-filled treats for the holiday season, so today’s gluten-free tip is all about a classic candy: M&Ms! We love adding m&ms to holiday Chex Mix, fudgy brownies, Gluten-Free M&M cookies, and more. The cute candy shell and delicious flavor are just too fun to miss!

How Can You Tell If M&Ms Are Gluten-Free?

M&Ms aren’t currently certified by the Gluten Intolerance Group, so they aren’t specifically labeled with that handy signature “GF” in a circle symbol. (Dangit!)

BUT.

The good news is that Mars (M&M’s parent company) does a great job labeling their candy products so it’s easy to tell which candies are considered gluten-free and which are not. They include an allergen warning on the ingredient list of all their products, which will alert you to the presence (or possible presence) of gluten, wheat or wheat flour, barley, rye, or other gluten-containing products.

Which M&Ms Are Gluten-Free?

Ok, so now that we know what to look for, which kinds of M&Ms ARE gluten-free? There is such a variety of flavors to keep track of, but at the time of this writing, here are the m&m varieties that do NOT have wheat ingredients or a “may contain wheat” statement:

• Milk Chocolate M&M’s are gluten-free. This almost always includes seasonal colorways (like red & green for Christmas, Valentine’s colors, etc.)
• Milk Chocolate M&M’s Minis are gluten-free
• Dark Chocolate M&M’s are gluten-free. Again, this almost always includes seasonal colors (like red & green for Christmas, Valentine’s colors, etc.)
• Peanut M&M’s, Dark Chocolate Peanut M&Ms, and White Chocolate M&Ms are gluten-free. (Note that the M&Ms peanut mix containing all three of these flavors of m&m is labeled “may contain gluten” even though the single flavor bags are not.)
• Caramel M&Ms
• Caramel Cold Brew M&Ms

In our experience, SOME seasonal varieties of m&ms can be gluten-free, while most of the limited edition or seasonal m&m’s flavors tend to contain gluten or a “may contain gluten” statement. 

One reason is because seasonal m&m flavors and specialty combinations are sometimes produced with a different production process than their original flavors, so they may contain gluten. ALWAYS read the package to be sure!)

Are M&Ms dairy-free? No. Sadly, there aren’t any dairy-free M&Ms. BUT! There are some dairy-free M&M-type candies that can work great for snacks or baking. We like unREAL quinoa crispy gems (don’t be scared, my quinoa-hating children LOVE them), and Little Secrets chocolate pieces candies. There are several vegan/dairy-free varieties from both brands to choose from! Both brands use natural dyes and are Fair Trade.

Are Marshmallows Gluten-Free?

YES! Most commercially-made marshmallows in the United States are gluten-free, even if they’re not specifically labeled as such. (That goes for brand names & store brands!)

The basic ingredients in marshmallows are things like sugar, corn syrup, or tapioca syrup, modified cornstarch, and gelatin. Some brands add additional flavorings, stabilizers, or preservatives, but in most cases all of the ingredients in marshmallows are gluten-free.

That said, it’s REALLY important to check your packaging if you have celiac disease, wheat allergies, or gluten intolerance/sensitivity, since some brands can use malt syrup, wheat starch, or glucose syrup derived from wheat. Here’s what to look for…

How Can You Tell If Marshmallows Are Gluten-Free?

Some marshmallows are produced on equipment shared with other products that may contain gluten, so ideally, when you need gluten-free marshmallows, it’s important to read the packaging and label to be sure. Here are some ways to check if your marshmallows are gluten-free:

• BEST = Clear labeling on the package that states “gluten-free” or “certified gluten-free.” These statements are regulated in the United States, and products must undergo testing to ensure there are less than 20 ppm of gluten. (ppm = parts per million) These are the safest options, as they’ve been tested. These are the best choice if you have celiac disease or wheat allergies.
• GOOD = Contain no gluten ingredients & no “may contain” statement. (If a product says “may contain wheat” or “may contain gluten,” there may be some risk of cross contact or cross-contamination (such as with shared equipment or facilities in the manufacturing processes). These can work well for gluten sensitivity, provided there is no “may contain” statement.
• RISKY = The marshmallows have a “may contain” statement. Under the ingredients list, some products will have a “may contain” statement (“may contain gluten” or “may contain wheat”) that discloses risk of cross contamination. If a product has a “may contain” statement, there is some risk of gluten in the marshmallows even if there are no gluten ingredients in the marshmallows themselves.
• NOT GLUTEN-FREE = The product contains wheat, barley, malt, or gluten. This is most common in specialty flavored, coated, or dipped marshmallows.

Which Brands Of Marshmallows Are Gluten-Free?

The great news is that in the U.S. many brands of marshmallows are naturally gluten-free. Again, you always want to double-check your packaging for a “gluten-free” designation or certification, but here are some great brands of gluten-free marshmallows:

Is Marshmallow Fluff Gluten-Free?

Now that you’ve got some great brands of gluten-free marshmallows to choose from, you may be wondering about gluten-free marshmallow fluff and marshmallow creme? Are marshmallow creme and marshmallow fluff gluten-free? Mostly, yes! Here are a few gluten-free marshmallow fluff brands to try:

• Jet-Puffed Marshmallow Creme – This brand doesn’t contain any gluten ingredients & doesn’t have a “may contain” statement.
• Fluff Brand. Famous for making the Fluffernutter sandwich (marshmallow fluff & peanut butter!), Fluff brand marshmallow creme is gluten-free! According to their site, all flavors of Fluff are gluten-free.
• Toonie Moonie Brand. We get this from Whole Foods and it’s got great flavor! Toonie Moonie organic marshmallow creme is kosher, gluten-free, dairy-free & lower in sugar than some other brands. It also avoids additives, dyes, and corn syrup. It does use egg whites, so keep that in mind if you have egg allergies.

Are Marshmallows Vegan? Many (most) brands of marshmallows contain gelatin, which is animal-derived. One great vegan brand of marshmallows is Dandies. They take a bit longer to melt, but they have great flavor and offer fun seasonal varieties, like peppermint & pumpkin! (I get them at Sprouts, Whole Foods or Amazon.) Another option is Trader Joe’s, but they aren’t always available. Marshmallow fluff usually contains egg whites, and is not vegan.

Are Marshmallows Dairy-Free? Yes! Most marshmallows are gluten-free and dairy-free, unless they’re dipped, coated, or flavored with something containing dairy (like caramel or chocolate). Even though they don’t have dairy, most marshmallows are NOT vegan, as they contain gelatin, which is animal-derived.

Can You Make Gluten-Free Marshmallows? Yes! They have a softer, more spongy texture than store-bought marshmallows, but they’re especially excellent for hot chocolate, s’mores & decorating cakes and cupcakes. Try these classic vanilla marshmallows, these chocolate marshmallows, or these peppermint marshmallows!

What Are The Best Gluten-Free Cornflakes? In our opinion, Barbara’s! They have the lightest, crispest texture and flavor most like traditional corn flakes. (We used to love Erewhon’s before they were discontinued.)

Are Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Gluten-Free? NO. Not in the United States. In the U.S., Kellogg’s corn flakes (and several of their other flake cereals like Special K and Frosted Flakes) are made with malt, which contains gluten. Kellogg’s corn flakes are NOT safe for anyone with Celiac disease or gluten intolerance. (FYI: Outside the US, Kellogg’s does carry a gluten-free option in some countries)

Are All Corn Flakes Gluten-Free? NO. You’d think they would be since they’re made of corn, but most brands of corn flakes contain malt syrup or malt extract, which contain gluten. You must buy gluten-free cornflakes if you have Celiac or gluten intolerance. (Look for that gluten-free label!)

What Other Cereals Are Gluten-Free? Too many to list, but most brands of Chex (other than Wheat Chex) are great options (Chocolate Chex, Cinnamon Chex, Rice Chex, Corn Chex, Vanilla Chex, etc.). Many varieties of Cheerios are gluten-free (check the labels!), and several brands carry gluten-free granola or certified gluten-free oats. Lucky Charms, Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles are also gluten-free!

I’m starting with Pamela’s gluten-free graham crackers because they’re one of the most widely available gluten-free brands of graham crackers out there AND they’re my favorite.

Pamela’s offers honey grahams, cinnamon graham crackers, chocolate chip graham crackers, and a new grain-free graham cracker variety. They have the flavor most similar to traditional graham crackers (that we’ve tried), and a nice texture that works well whether you’re using them for s’mores, layering them in desserts, or crushing them for gluten-free graham cracker crust.

KinniKinnick Gluten-Free Graham Crackers

• TASTE TEST SCORE: 5/10 (graham crackers), 7/10 (animal crackers)
• PRICE: $4-10
• WHERE TO BUY: Kinnikinnick, Sprouts, Walmart, Amazon, Natural Grocers

Kinnikinnick’s S’moreables gluten-free graham style crackers are another brand that’s sold in many stores, making it a bit more accessible. Their crackers are smaller, thicker, and denser than traditional graham crackers, so they’re not my first choice for snacking or s’mores. They do make great graham cracker crusts, though!

They also carry and graham-style animal crackers (called KinniKritters), which I think have better texture than their actual graham crackers. The animal crackers work well as a snack, but can also be used for graham cracker crusts.

Nairn’s Gluten-Free Graham crackers

• TASTE TEST SCORE: 8/10
• PRICE: $4-8
• WHERE TO BUY: Sprouts, iHerb, Amazon, Natural Grocers

Nairn’s brand has pretty good graham flavor, with a slightly more rustic British biscuit-like texture to me. Their original oat grahams work well for small s’mores, or for using in graham cracker crust, while their other varieties, like Stem Ginger, Chocolate Chip, and Apple Cinnamon, make for great snacking.

Which Gluten-Free Graham Crackers Taste The Best? Totally subjective and your answer might be different than mine, but I’d say Pamela’s are my favorite. Simple Mills is the best grain-free choice I tried.

What Are The Best Gluten-Free Graham Crackers For Pie Crust? I recommend Pamela’s, Schar, or Kinnikinnick for making gluten-free graham cracker pie crust. They hold their texture best without going soggy and they’re some of the easier crackers to find.

Which Gluten-Free Graham Crackers Are Best For S’mores? I recommend Pamela’s, Schar, or Nairn’s. They hold up the best with marshmallows and chocolate and are a great size for making s’mores!

Are Honey Maid Graham Crackers Gluten-Free? Sadly, no! You must buy certified gluten-free graham crackers. (We think Pamela’s are the closest match!)

How Many Gluten-Free Graham Crackers Equals A Sleeve? Lots of crust or bar recipes that use traditional graham crackers call for a sleeve of graham crackers. Gluten-free graham crackers don’t come in the same size sleeves or containers, so it’s best to use the volume measurement for crushed graham crackers. (The weight measurement will vary brand to brand as some brands are more dense than others) For instance, if a recipe calls for 1 1/2 cups of crushed graham crackers, use the same amount of crushed gluten-free graham crackers.
